Since Slovoj Zizek was heavily influenced by Lacan, I think he might be a good option for the third theorist. Plus he’s pretty funny and entertaining. Check out the links to get a better sense of Zizek, if you don’t know him already.

Zizek would be great! I just saw him talk the other day.
In other news it looks like you are doing well as a group! Good posts, good comments. Nice work.

Zizek would fit in nicely, esp. since we’re doing Lacan. I also saw him talk, but it was at the NYPL last spring. Yes, I think our group is doing well together. Thanks!

Thank you Liz and Mitsue for your suggestions on a third theorist. I read the information on all three and I’m a little biased because Christakis is a medical sociologist and that happens to be my favorite topic, however Zizek seems pretty fascinating and relevant to the economy and problems of capitalism that we are now facing. My vote is for either one of these.

Katherine, I saw the Christakis TED talk and I think he’s very interesting, but he’s not so much a theorist but rather a social researcher. I read the post you did on “The power of the doctor.” Zizek has said that the DSM is a great example of the material power of ideology because hospitals, clinics, and insurance companies usually require a diagnosis from the DSM and seemingly insignificant changes to the manual can have great financial consequences.

Zizek sounds fascinating. I’d be happy to have him as the 3rd thinker!

After looking into Zizek I must agree that he should be our third theorist. He seems rather interesting =]
